If you are like most motorcycle owners you enjoy the open road that the feel of wind rushing past your face. In fact, if you are like most cyclists, your bike is not only a hobby, but a passion. For those individuals that have a Harley, Triumph, Honda, Ducati or other bike, getting the right look and the proper gear is essential to the entire motorcycle experience. In fact, looking the part is almost as important as just having the opportunity to ride.

So if you just bought a new bike, where do you go, and what do you do? If you have already made the investment in your motorcycle and plan to customize it over time, the first step is to get the right gear. This includes a motorcycle, jacket, gloves, helmet and associated safety equipment. Along with the bike itself, your first purchase should be your motorcycle helmet.

Motorcycle Helmets

Although many states do not have helmet laws, a DOT helmet should be the one critical piece of safety gear that you never ride without. Even though we don’t like to think about them, accidents happened and if you don’t have a helmet your chances of debilitating injury, even at neighborhood speeds, is extremely high. Depending on the type of bike you own and your personal preference, you may opt for a full helmet, a half helmet, a ¾ design or a skull cap. In general the skull cap offers the least protection and is often relied upon by individuals just trying to obey local riding laws. For riders that take their protection seriously, a ¾ helmet or a full helmet is a better choice. If you own a street bike the helmet of choice both from a fashion and safety standpoint is a full helmet. In recent years convertible helmets, full helmets where the face plate flips up, have become available to add additional options to motorcycle riders.

Motorcycle Jackets

In addition to your helmet, you should consider protective clothing when you ride. For street bike owners this generally consists of either a motorcycle jacket for men or a full leather motorcycle racing suit. For owners of Harley Davidson motorcycles and other street cruisers, a tough leather motorcycle jacket for men or women is typically the covering of choice.

Motorcycle Gloves and Footwear

Along with the jacket and helmet, gloves and shoes that protect your ankle are also a good idea. In the event that your bike goes down, or even if you get hit by rocks and debris while riding, it is best to ensure that all exposed skin is protected.

Customized Motorcycle Parts

Most motorcycle owners prefer to customize their bike to make their own statement. For owners of street cruisers and choppers, this may entail customizing some or even all of the motorcycle. When customizing a motorcycle, most people take one of two tacks. Most motorcycle owners take their bike and make small periodic modifications on a piece by piece basis as they find customized components that they feel would look good on the bike. This is exemplified by most Harley owners who slowly change out the stock components of their motorcycle for custom chrome components. These Harley Owners Group members slowly change out the pipes, pegs, grips, handlebars and every other component of the motorcycle as it becomes more and more custom.

The other approach that fans of custom motorcycles take is to purchase a bike that has already been chopped, or buy a semi-custom motorcycle and immediately make the modifications that make the bike unique. These individuals typically know exactly what they want in their motorcycle and are willing to accept the up-front expense of customization to get the exact motorcycle that they want. Features such as custom paint, ape hanger handle bars, midnight black powder coating and countless other customizations can be found as these motorcycle owners create the bike of their dreams.
